The only Coastal City has established itself as a modern coastal centre of cafes, boutiques, street art and galleries. The city’s history and culture complement the relaxed seaside atmosphere, offering the perfect blend of things to see and do while feeling laid back. The beaches and sunny climate make it popular with water sports enthusiasts and tourists looking to soak up the pristine white sand.

Inland lies the Chapman Valley, home to gorgeous rolling hills, scenic roads, wildflowers and microbreweries. Mallewa is in the heart of the wildflower region and is rich in architectural heritage. To the west are the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, an unspoilt archipelago full of beauty, marine adventures and history.

Enjoy beaches and water sports

Geraldton’s coastline is a water sports enthusiast’s paradise, with swimming, surfing, paddle boarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving, snorkelling, fishing and beach combing. In the warmer months (November to April), head to Town Beach to go flyboarding, water skiing, wakeboarding or tubing. Constant summer winds have made Geraldton one of the world’s best windsurfing and kitesurfing spots. Point Moore, Sunset Beach, St. George Beach and Coronation Beach offer excellent conditions (October to April). Winter is ideal for surfing: Back Beach is a good place for beginners, while Sunset Beach, Greenough and Flat Rocks are for more experienced surfers with solid waves.

Town Beach, located along the Geraldton coastline, is family-friendly with barbecues, free Wi-Fi, picnic tables, a play area, a water park and a youth area. The beach area will provide peace and joy for children, as there is colourful climbing equipment, slides and swings, fountains and much more. The nearby Esplanade offers fantastic city views from its paths and observation decks.

For an authentic, immersive experience, visit Geraldton Harbour, stopping by the Lobster Pot Pull in the morning and asking the chef to cook your catch. Or enjoy a summer sunset cruise, taking in the iconic Western Australian sunset from the ocean. Enjoy food, drink and live music during the warmer months (November to January). Paradise Island

Just 60 km off the coast, the Houtman Abrolhos Islands are Geraldton’s water playground – one of Australia’s best places to fish, dive, windsurf, swim or relax on white sandy beaches. Enjoy a scenic flight or stay aboard a multi-day cruise ship. The islands are the second Australian site to be designated a Mission Blue ‘Watch of Hope’, a role that aims to identify vital ecosystems and build support for their conservation as marine protected areas.

Exploring culture, history, and heritage

With its iconic red and white design, the Point Moore Lighthouse is Australia’s tallest metal lighthouse at 34 metres. Its beam can be seen from 26 kilometres out to sea, and it is the oldest Commonwealth lighthouse still operating in Western Australia.

Lighthouse open days are held at various times throughout the year. Find out about the next open day at the Geraldton Visitor Centre. The nearby Separation Point Lookout offers incredible panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the coastal town!

The HMAS Sydney II memorial on Mount Scott honours the 645 Australian crew members who died in a World War II naval battle in 1941. The monument consists of five symbolic elements: the central memorial building, including the Dome of Souls, the Wall of Remembrance, the Stela, the Woman in Waiting and the Pool of Remembrance: Closing the Circle. Volunteer-led tours begin daily at 10.30 am (donations welcome).

Visit the Geraldton Museum to learn more about the rich heritage of the land, sea and people of the Geraldton region. Discover the archaeological riches of four Dutch wrecks – the Batavia, the Gilded Dragon, the Zuidorp and the Zijweijk – in the Wreck Gallery or join a guided tour (daily at 11.30 am). Enjoy a 3D film showing the HMAS Sydney II and HSK Kormoran lying 2,500 metres below the surface. Open from 9.30 am to 3 pm daily, except public holidays. Through an interactive presentation of videos, images and a diverse collection of artefacts, the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre provides insight into the life and work of Monsignor John Hawes. The Byzantine-style Cathedral of St Francis Xavier is one of his greatest masterpieces. Guided tours are available for a small fee (Mondays, Wednesdays and Sundays at 14:30 and Fridays at 16:00). The cathedral is part of the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Trail.

Explore Geraldton’s Indigenous culture on the Yamatji Drive Trail, which includes 14 sites of significance to the Yamatji Aboriginal people living in the Geraldton, Greenough and Moollewa areas. Please pick up a guide brochure at the Geraldton Visitor Centre and follow it up with a visit to the Aboriginal-owned and operated Yamatji Art Centre. The gallery provides professional support and development services for Aboriginal artists living in the Lower Murchison area of Yamatji Country, focusing on sustaining culture and artistic practices while creating economic benefits.

Take advantage of the Geraldton Art Trail by picking up a map at the Geraldton Visitor Centre and embark on a self-guided tour of the city, where you’ll see colourful street art, local galleries, art installations such as the Ilgarijiri (emu egg sculpture), and decorated walls (such as the famous butterfly wall), pathways and pillars. Visit Geraldton Fisherman's Wharf

Located in Geraldton’s West End, in the city’s fishing harbour, the Fisherman’s Wharf is a working marina where you can buy fresh seafood straight from the boat, relax and enjoy seafood dishes or go on an adventure to the Abrolhos Islands, fishing or lobster hunting.
