Where is Kalbarri National Park?

The magnificent and relatively isolated Kalbarri National Park covers an area of 186,000 hectares. Located almost 600 kilometres north of Perth (a 6-7 hour drive) and between the towns of Carnarvon and Geraldton, the magnificent Kalbarri National Park is undoubtedly one of Western Australia’s most popular parks, attracting thousands of visitors yearly.

The multifaceted Kalbarri National Park and the town of Kalbarri are divided into two distinct landscape types. In the northeast are impressive rock formations and inland gorges, while the southern part is marked by dangerous limestone cliffs leading down to the Indian Ocean.

Walk along the many coastal cliffs of the Kalbarri

Plenty of opportunities exist to enjoy panoramic views of ocean waves crashing on the rugged shore, fantastic rock formations and dangerous coastal cliffs rising more than 100 metres above the water.

A Natural Bridge: This Kalbarri wonder is far from the car park. Here you will enjoy the view of the beach and the sea. If you’re lucky, you might even see whales and dolphins.

Island Rock was once a part of the coastline but is now a lonely “sea wall” defying the wind and water. You can enjoy incredible views of this geological wonder from a platform located a short walk from the car park.

Bigurda Trail: The Bigurda Trail is an above-ground footpath connecting Island Rock to a natural bridge. Here, you will find a shaded canopy where you can sit back and relax while enjoying the coastal views. At the same time, it is the most challenging walk on this side of the Kalbarri National Park. The Bigurda Trail is 8 kilometres long one way, so you should be prepared to walk 16 kilometres. This sandy trail connects Eagle Gorge to the Natural Bridge and offers hikers a unique opportunity to admire the picturesque coastline. But be careful; loose stones are on the way, and parts of the trail that approach the cliff top.

Pothole Lane: The beautiful scenery may fascinate you, but don’t try to swim, even if you can reach the beautiful beach. Pothole Lane is a dangerous cove!

These are just a few places you can visit in the Kalbarri National Park. Other places to visit include Shellhouse Grandstand, Eagle Gorge, Mushroom Rock Nature Trail, Red Bluff Lookout, Pederick Lookout and the Red Bluff to Beach Trail (Gaba Gaba Ina).

Spectacular views of the Kalbarri Skywalk

For some of the most stunning views in Kalbarri National Park, you’ll need to brave the newly opened Kalbarri Skywalk. This pair of 100-metre-high viewpoints stretches 25 and 17 metres along the edge of Murchison Gorge.

The flat path to the Skywalk makes this area very accessible. What’s more, there are toilets and spots where you can take a break from your adventure. If you run out of water (something to avoid here) and the small shop is open, you can also buy drinking water.

Hiking and picnicking at Z Bend Lookout and the River Trail

Planning a hike in Kalbarri? Choose between the more accessible Z Bend Lookout Trail or the challenging Z Bend River Trail.

Z Bend Lookout Trail: This 1.2km walk (in the opposite direction) from the car park leads to a magnificent rocky lookout 150 metres above the Murchison River Gorge. Bring your picnic tables and barbecue!

Z Bend River Trail: A more challenging 2.6km route for more experienced hikers, the Z Bend River Trail leads to the river from the Z Bend Lookout (Z Bend Walking Trail). It includes a steep descent into the spectacular gorge, stairs, and walks along natural rocky paths, sometimes with unstable rocks.

Pose for a picture at the iconic Nature's Window

One of Western Australia’s most iconic natural landmarks, Nature’s Window, is about 500 metres from The Loop (or Inyaka Wookai Watju) car park. Composed of layers of Tumblagooda sandstone, Nature’s Window is a natural arch perfect for your photo shoot with the Murchison River in the background.

This famous spot also marks the beginning and end of the popular but challenging The Loop Trail, an 8km walking trail.
